Family planning for fire, flood and earthquakes
Shared supplies are useful, but each hazard needs its own local instructions.
Fire: agree the escape plan
Check smoke alarms, know exits and discuss what each person will do. During escape from a house fire, do not stop to collect belongings. A grab bag is for situations where taking it is safe; it must not slow escape.
Flood: check the local plan
Prepare document protection, routes and alerts before flooding. Follow evacuation instructions and avoid entering floodwater. Do not touch an electrical switch while standing in water. Official local guidance is essential for route and utility decisions.
Earthquake: use local civil protection
Building type, location and damage affect the response. Read the local earthquake guidance and discuss communication and meeting arrangements. This tool cannot assess structural safety, decide a building is safe or provide an evacuation route during a live incident.
