Family preparation for extreme heat and cold
Adapt clothing, destinations and support to the forecast and household.
Heat changes the plan
Check local alerts and identify an accessible cooler place. Babies, older people and people with some health conditions may need extra support. Review water and suitable sun protection. Never leave children or pets alone in a stationary car.
Cold needs safe warmth
Prepare layers, suitable footwear and a warm destination. Make arrangements for food, medicines and help if travel is disrupted. Review combustion safety: improvised indoor heating can create carbon monoxide hazards.
Prepare support before the forecast worsens
Agree who checks on people needing help and how to communicate. The climate choice in the simulator adds planning items; it does not estimate safe exposure times or replace health advice. Read the hot- and cold-weather guidance linked below.
